Waterfalls of New Hampshire
If you love waterfalls then be sure to include several days on trip itinerary
for hiking in the White Mountain region. The falls here
are some of the most splendid cascades in the state. The
best time to see the falls is in the spring. Here are a
few to get you started.
Arethusa Falls -This is New Hampshire’s tallest
waterfall. It drops for an impressive 176 feet. You can
reach it by hiking the 1.3 mile Crawford Notch Trail. Also
in this area are Ripley Falls and the Kendron Flume.
Diana’s Bath - Follow the user-friendly trail from
West Side Road in North Conway to where the Lucy Brook cascades
to the crystal-clear pools. The falls her are especially
beautiful at night.
Crystal Cascade - a 2 tiered cascading waterfall
over stone ledges into the Majestic Cutter River.
Sabbaday Falls - Triple drops, sparkling pools,
a potholes formed by the water and sand, this is a great
spot for a picnic lunch.
Glen Ellis Falls - Here you can see gorgeous waterfalls
that tumble 64 feet into swirling white water rapids. There
are markers along the banks giving the history of the area.
The Appalachia Waterfalls (Randolph) consist of the following: Cold
Brook Falls (30 feet tall), Tama Fall (40 feet tall), Salroc
Falls, and Gordon Falls (18 feet). They can be reached by
hiking an easy to moderate 2.6 mile loop trail. There are
several shallow pools at the base of the falls perfect for
wading.
Thompson Falls (Pinkham’s Grant) - Take the easy 20 minute hike to see
the cascades as they careen over a clam shaped outcropping.
And, if getting wet isn’t an issue, you can make your way
to a position behind the falls.
Thoreau Falls (Lincoln) - An 80 foot drop into a hidden wading pool
down below. You can reach the falls by hiking an easy to
moderate 4.8 mile trail. There are flat rocks and smooth
surfaces ideal for picnicking.
Mossy Glen (Randolph) - Follow the easy .3 mile trail to the 40 foot
falls as they race downward to the whirlpool below.
Winniweta Falls (Jackson) - Just off NH 16 and south of the Mount Washington
Auto Road is the beautiful Winniweta Fall. Although vegetation
hides the view a bi, these impressive falls are worth the
30 minute hike. Be advised that there have been sightings
of moose tracks along the way.
