Portsmouth, New Hampshire Visitors Guide

This historic town is rich in impressive architecture from Colonial homes to modern day buildings. It offers an assortment of fun for everyone and solitude for those looking for a peaceful town to relax and rejuvenate.
Historic Sites & Locations:

  • Fort Constitution (New Castle/Portsmouth Harbor)-This is the site of the 1st act of the colonist against the English prior to the Revolutionary War.
  • Gov. John Langdon House - Once home to 3 time governor John L. Langdon, the home is now furnished in era pieces. It is surrounded by impressive gardens of perennials.
  • John Paul Jones House - Here you can see costumes, furniture, china glass, documents, and weapons from the 1700’s.
  • Warner House - this beautiful historic Georgian home has restored murals, and a lightening rod believed to have been installed by Ben Franklin in 1762.
  • Strawberry Banke Museum - fully restored waterside neighborhood where the original settlement once was. As you tour, you will see 42 buildings from 1695 to 1950, 9 historic homes, a pottery shop/demonstrations, family programs and archeological exhibits.

Other historic homes include the Jackson House, the Runtlet-may House, the Moffat-Ladd House and the Wentworth-Gardner House.
Attractions & Entertainment:

    • Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse -The 1878 Harbor Lighthouse is open for tours during the summer season.
    • The Music Hall - New Hampshire’s oldest theatre (1878) is now a non-profit performing arts center featuring films, music, theatre and dance.
    • Portsmouth Brewery -Tour New Hampshire’s oldest brewery (1991) and have a mug of whatever is on tap along with a great meal in the Jimmy LaPanza Lounge.
    • Smuttynose Brewing Company - The premier brewing company in New Hampshire. They are the producers of several award winning beers.
    • Portsmouth Harbor Cruises - Guided tours of the Portsmouth Harbor where you can learn the area’s history from 1623 to now.
    • Bellamy River Wildlife Management Area - A prime are for seeing migrating birds and large game.
    • Pease Golf Course - Set in beautifully wooded area dotted with streams, this course offers 27 holes perfect for any skill level.
    • Children’s Museum -Grab your kids, but not someone elses, and spend a day playing and learning where “Don’t Touch!” is rarely uttered.
